Waar te beginnen…
Ik kan nog steeds niet geloven wat ik heb meegemaakt gisteren in De Meerpaal. Ik kan na gisterenavond aan bijna niets anders meer denken. Hoe leg je dit gevoel uit aan iemand die er niet
bij was? Laat staan aan iemand die geen kenner is van het oneindige, mooie oeuvre van Billy Joel. Mijn vrouw en ik zijn uitzinnig. Nog steeds.
Alexander Broussard heeft zijn droom, die van de band en de dromen van de fans in de zaal doen uitkomen. Vanuit New York overgevlogen kwam Richie Cannata meespelen, de belangrijke man op saxofoon en klarinet op de mooiste albums van Billy Joel, onder meer Turnstiles, The Stranger en 52nd Street. Oneindige dank voor de stoute schoenen en het lef voor Alexander dat hij Richie heeft opgezocht in New York. Wie is Richie? Pak de plaat The Stranger uit 1977 uit de kast, draai de elpeehoes om en zie daar naast Billy in de ruiten blouse Richie aan tafel zitten.

Ik was 17 jaar toen ik samen met mijn grote broer naar mijn eerste concert ging. Naar Billy Joel in Gent tijdens de River Of Dreams Tour. Ik wist niet wat me overkwam. Op een paar meter afstand van Billy. Compleet onder de indruk van Crystal Taliefero op percussie, Liberty DeVitto op drums, Mark Rivera op saxofoon en klarinet en Billy op piano. In shock van de nummers Pressure, The Ballad Of Billy The Kid, Prelude / Angry Young Man, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, An Innocent Man en Goodnight Saigon. Ik heb daarna in korte tijd alle albums gekocht en alle nummers sindsdien erg veel geluisterd. Sindsdien betekent de muziek van Billy Joel erg veel voor mij. De muziek van Billy is er altijd. Wanneer ik vrolijk ben, en ook wanneer ik het nodig heb om me weer beter te voelen.

Na acht jaar ging ik eindelijk weer naar een concert van Billy. Nu met mijn vrouw, recht voor de neus en piano van Billy. Deze keer ongelofelijk onder de indruk van Zanzibar, Miami 2017 en uiteraard Piano Man. Niet uit te leggen wat het gevoel is als je aanwezig bent geweest bij een concert van Billy, laat staan als je op drie meter van Billy staat.

Toen kwam Alexander in ons leven. Na het volgen van The Tribute, Battle of the Bands op televisie hebben we Alexander gezien bij drie zeer uiteenlopende optredens. In de Ziggo Dome samen met zijn vaste band, bij een solo-optreden in een pastabar, in het theater samen met Guy Harris als Elton John. De locaties en samenstellingen waren elke keer anders. Maar elke keer was Alexander hetzelfde: een echte gastheer, charmant, een verteller, ongelofelijk muzikaal en goed bij stem. En bovenal een echte entertainer. In een volle Ziggo pakte Alexander iedereen in, hij had iedereen in zijn zak. In de pastabar vertelde Alexander mooie verhalen over het leven van Billy. Als rasechte muzikant en vooral als echte liefhebber van de muziek van Billy. Het was op een hele mooie manier erg emotioneel voor mij om in een pastabar op vaderdag, met mijn vrouw en kind naast mij, met Alexander recht voor ons neus het nummer You’re My Home te horen zingen en spelen. Want mijn vrouw en dochter zijn mijn home. Door Alexander is de muziek van Billy weer veel in mijn leven en kan ik de prachtige nummers doorgeven aan mijn dochter van tien jaar, die het gelukkig ook heel mooi vindt.
De Meerpaal, 22 januari 2023
Met ontzettend veel zin en zelfs wat gezonde spanning gingen we naar Dronten voor een uniek concert. We voelden dat hier iets heel bijzonders zou gaan gebeuren, waarbij we hoopten op mooie albumtracks met de echt Billy-sound. En dat gebeurde. In een uitverkochte Meerpaal startte de avond fantastisch. Met een prachtig ingetogen saxofoonintro startte Robbert Tuinhof de avond met het mooie nummer The Stranger van het gelijknamige album. Extra mooi, omdat vanavond de focus vooral lag op Richie Cannata, die centraal zou staan met zijn saxofoon en klarinet. Alexander was vervolgens weergaloos op zijn piano en vocaal bij Prelude / Angry Young Man. Daarna volgde James met Dennis Servais op toetsen in de hoofdrol. Pas bij het zevende nummer kwam Richie erbij. Fenomenaal was het. Bewonderenswaardig hoe de band en Richie elkaar zó aanvoelden en op elkaar ingespeeld waren. De band heeft Richie pas op zondag ontmoet, en na één soundcheck was het alsof de heren al jaren met elkaar speelden. Dat kunnen alleen topmuzikanten. Na nummers als Miami 2017, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, Summer Highland Falls (met een prachtig, ontroerend klarinetduet door Richie en Robbert), Just the Way You Are was het laatste nummer voor de pauze New York State of Mind. De zaal ging uit zijn dak. Prachtig samenspel, fenomenale solo’s van Alexander en Richie en de uitstekende begeleidingsband met Marcello Briganti als rustige en onmisbare bassist als basis.
De avond vervolgde na de pauze voor mij met één van de hoogtepunten, ook omdat ik het nummer niet zag aankomen. The Ballad Of Billy The Kid startte met de mondharmonica door Freek Volkers en was schitterend, ook door de geweldige timing van drummer Danny de Louw. Breekbaar was Alexander toen hij zei dat hij zelden nerveus is voor een optreden, maar dat hij dat vanavond wel was. Alexander vroeg bevestiging aan de zaal met de woorden: “Maar het gaat goed, toch?”, waarna hij het toepasselijke nummer You’re Only Human startte. Het hoogtepunt voor mij was Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, voor mij één van de allermooiste nummers ooit gemaakt en bij mij van vaste waarde in mijn Top 2000-lijstje. Dit nummer is op album al prachtig, maar live door hele goede muzikanten een echte ervaring. Niet voor niets ook favoriet van Billy Joel zelf tijdens concerten. Gisterenavond helemaal met Richie Cannata, die de saxofoonpartijen net zo intens en warm speelde als op het album. De avond sloot af met de heerlijke meezinger Piano Man en Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song), een echte albumtrack voor echte Billy-fans.
Deze avond was ongelofelijk bijzonder. Geweldige nummers, gespeeld door fantastische muzikanten met een hele bijzondere gast uit Brooklyn. Ik hoop dat Richie net zo genoten heeft als de zaal, de band en Alexander en dat er een vervolg komt. Wellicht zelfs met Liberty DeVitto en Russel Javors van The Lords of 52nd Street. Het was echt heel emotioneel, ben nog steeds sprakeloos en tegelijkertijd kan en wil ik niet stoppen om erover te praten.
Ik hoop je nog heel vaak te mogen zien spelen, Alexander. Met hopelijk veel echte albumtracks, net als gisteren. Dank, dank, dank.

Where to start…
I still can’t believe what I experienced yesterday in De Meerpaal. Can’t think of anything else after last night. How do you explain this feeling to someone who wasn’t there? Never mind someone who is not a connoisseur of Billy Joel’s endless, beautiful oeuvre. My wife and I are delirious. Still.
Alexander Broussard has fulfilled his dream, that of the band and the dreams of the fans in the theatre. Flown in from New York, Richie Cannata came to play, the important man on saxophone and clarinet on Billy Joel’s best albums, including Turnstiles, The Stranger and 52nd Street. Infinite thanks for being bold and courage for Alexander to visit Richie in New York. Who is Richie? Take the 1977 record The Stranger from the shelf, turn the LP cover over and see Richie sitting at the table next to Billy in the check shirt.

I was 17 years old when I went to my first concert with my big brother. To Billy Joel in Ghent during the River Of Dreams Tour. I didn’t know what hit me. A few feet away from Billy. Completely impressed with Crystal Taliefero on percussion, Liberty DeVitto on drums, Mark Rivera on saxophone and clarinet and Billy on piano. In shock of the songs Pressure, The Ballad Of Billy The Kid, Prelude / Angry Young Man, Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, An Innocent Man and Goodnight Saigon. I then bought all the albums in a short time and listened to all the songs a lot since then. Since then, Billy Joel’s music has meant a lot to me. Billy’s music is always there. When I’m happy, and also when I need to feel better again.

After eight years I finally went to see a Billy concert again. Now with my wife, right in front of Billy’s nose and piano. This time incredibly impressed by Zanzibar, Miami 2017 and of course Piano Man. It can’t be explained what it feels like when you’ve been to a Billy concert, never mind when you’re ten feet away from Billy.

Then Alexander came into our lives. After following The Tribute, Battle of the Bands on television, we have seen Alexander at three very different performances. In the Ziggo Dome together with his regular band, at a solo performance in a pasta bar, in the theatre together with Guy Harris as Elton John. The locations and compositions were different every time. But every time Alexander was the same: a real host, charming, a storyteller, incredibly musical and a good voice. And above all a real entertainer. Everyone in a full Ziggo Dome was very excited. In the pasta bar, Alexander told nice stories about Billy’s life. As a true musician and especially as a true lover of Billy’s music. It was very emotional for me in a very beautiful way to be in a pasta bar on Father’s Day, with my wife and child next to me, with Alexander singing and playing the song You’re My Home right in front of us. Because my wife and daughter are my home. Thanks to Alexander, Billy’s music is very much in my life again and I can pass on the beautiful songs to my ten-year-old daughter, who fortunately also thinks it is very beautiful.

With a lot of sense and even some healthy excitement we went to Dronten for a unique concert. We felt that something very special was going to happen here, and we hoped for beautiful album tracks with the real Billy sound. And that happened. The evening got off to a fantastic start in a sold-out Meerpaal. With a beautifully subdued saxophone intro, Robbert Tuinhof started the evening with the beautiful song The Stranger from the album with the same name. Extra nice, because tonight the focus was mainly on Richie Cannata, who would be central with his saxophone and clarinet. Alexander was peerless on his piano and vocal with Prelude / Angry Young Man. Then James followed with Dennis Servais on keys in the lead role. It wasn’t until the seventh song that Richie joined. It was phenomenal. It is admirable how the band and Richie were so attuned to each other. The band only met Richie on Sunday, and after one sound check it was as if the gentlemen had been playing together for years. Only top musicians can do that. After songs like Miami 2017, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, Summer Highland Falls (with a beautiful, touching clarinet duet by Richie and Robbert), Just the Way You Are was the last song before the break New York State of Mind. The theatre exploded. Beautiful interplay, phenomenal solos by Alexander and Richie and the excellent backing band with Marcello Briganti as a calm and indispensable bass player as a basis.
The evening continued after the break with one of the highlights for me, also because I didn’t expected the song. The Ballad Of Billy The Kid started with the harmonica by Freek Volkers and was brilliant, also due to the great timing of drummer Danny de Louw. Alexander was fragile when he said that he is rarely nervous before a performance, but he was tonight. Alexander asked the audience for confirmation with the words: “But it’s going well, right?”, after which he started the appropriate song You’re Only Human. The highlight for me was Scenes From an Italian Restaurant, for me one of the most beautiful songs ever made and a permanent value in my Top 2000 list. This song is already beautiful on album, but live by very good musicians a real experience. Not for nothing also a favorite of Billy Joel himself during concerts. Especially last night with Richie Cannata, who played the saxophone parts just as intensely and warmly as on the album. The evening ended with the wonderful sing-along Piano Man and Movin ‘Out (Anthony’s Song), a real album track for real Billy fans.
This evening was incredibly special. Great songs played by great musicians with a very special guest from Brooklyn. I hope Richie enjoyed it as much as the people in the theatre, the band and Alexander and that there will be a sequel. Perhaps even with Liberty DeVitto and Russel Javors from The Lords of 52nd Street. It was really very emotional, I’m still speechless and at the same time I can’t and won’t stop talking about it.
I hope to see you play many more times, Alexander. With hopefully many real album tracks, just like yesterday. Thanks, thanks, thanks.
